I recently participated in a Twitter Chat targeted towards social studies educators (#sschat). I have participated previously, but the topic of this one specifically intrigued me - Integrating Social Emotional Learning into Social Studies Instruction. I have not taken much time to consider how I integrate social emotional learning (SEL) into my instruction specific to social studies so I was curious to hear how others were doing it.
After a brief introduction where I saw some familiar faces from previous chats and was introduced to some new educators, we were off to a start. In total there were 7 questions asked related to SEL and social studies. While I was uncertain about SEL going into the chat, one participant shared a resource on SEL and the different competencies of it. This helped me understand and begin to make connections to my own teaching with it.
I am looking forward to participating in more Twitter chats. It expanded my Professional Learning Network and helped me understand how Twitter can be used as a 21st century affinity space that works together to solve a problem (Gee, 2017).

While there were only 7 questions asked the hour-long chat flew by. I was engaged with other participants sharing ideas, asking questions, and sharing resources. I was blown away by the level of engagement. I had several tabs open after the chat with articles to read and activities to try with my students. I learned that I am already incorporating SEL practices into my teaching, with activities like perspective taking, even though I did not realize it. I plan on using additional strategies and ideas that were shared in my classroom, like having students revise work to ensure they will meet a deadline to help with time management skills.
